Spinal Flow

Spinal Flow Technique was founded by Dr Carli Axford, a Double Dux Bachelor of chiropractic. The technique is an incredibly fast and effective way to help you heal and feel amazing in your body again. It’s a gentle and holistic approach and is used to treat many discomforts, illnesses, and pain throughout the body.

Spinal Flow Technique is a blend of cutting-edge science and healing arts. The reason why it is so incredibly effective is that emotional, chemical, and physical tension is located in the nervous system and this technique allows the blockages to be released and healed.

When we experience illness and pain, it’s because we are holding onto stress. This stress prevents the body from healing itself and puts our body into a fight-or-flight response.

In Spinal Flow, we have 3 types of stresses: physical, chemical, and emotional. These stresses create blockages along the spine, which over time can cause postural changes and in acute states, may cause illness.

Spinal Flow Technique works through gentle touch on the body that connects with the nervous system to bring safety and ease to the body. In this state, your body can heal symptoms such as anxiety, joint and muscle pain, inflammation, kyphosis, scoliosis, headaches and many others.

The beauty of this modality is that as your body comes back to a place of ease and flexibility, symptoms will resolve.

FAQs

If you have any of the following: pain, anxiety, insomnia, digestive issues, headaches, chronic illness, or acute symptoms, Spinal Flow can be helpful.

The reason it is so broad is that a Spinal Flow treatment is supporting your nervous system to activate the self-healing in your body. By moving your body out of the fight, flight, and alertness state, and changing it into the restful, parasympathetic state, your body will take care of the healing.

Simply bringing you into a restful state allows your immune system, digestive system and adrenal system to activate normally. As your body comes back to a place of ease and flexibility, symptoms will resolve. This in turn will help you feel safe and relaxed and able to sleep, further enhancing your body’s ability to heal.

A typical Spinal Flow session may last 30mins, sometimes less for kids. Please allow around 45 minutes or up to an hour for your first visit, so we can take a history and do an assessment.

No. You can stay fully clothed, although please avoid wearing jeans or stiff clothing as contact needs to be made with your sacrum (triangular bone between hips). Please wear light, comfortable clothing, such as track pants, or pants with an elasticated waist, t-shirts, and jumpers.

Ideally, you will be able to lie face down on the treatment table. If you can’t lie face down due to discomfort, we can use a pillow, or the next best thing is on your side.

If you really can’t lie down at all, points on your head can be used while you are sitting up. If you have specialised mobility needs, please call me to discuss them so we can work out a plan.

In a session, gentle touch is used on your sacrum. We may also move to points on your head, and around your body to increase the spinal wave.

The touch is always gentle, and sometimes you may not feel it. This is when you are fully connected to your inner healing.

What is looked for, is the ‘Spinal Wave’ that travels through your body. This wave indicates that your body is ‘working’ to clear blockages and to bring you into a healing state.

My intention is that every session will bring change to your body, and that all change is good no matter what the body experiences.

How this treatment is experienced by clients does vary.

Some people find that it’s like meditation, and go into deep relaxation. They find the session to be very peaceful and rejuvenating.

Others may feel their breath increase and their body move or twitch.

It is not unusual to feel some emotions: you may feel unwell, cry, or even laugh. Your body will respond as it needs to, and you may find that it feels different depending on whether the priority for your body is to clear emotional, physical, or chemical blockages.

You may experience less pain and discomfort after a session. When the condition has existed for some time, possibly even decades, there may in fact be more pain for a while as the changes take place in your body.

Please let Vicki know if you are worried about any pain you have after treatment so it can be addressed.

This depends on your needs and wants. You will find each one of us will have many layers. Once or even twice a week for so many visits is recommended, although this depends on how acute or how quickly your body lets go of these blockages.

Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy is a holistic remedial technique that aims to treat pain by gently stretching the fascia (soft outer tissue) of the muscles and organs. It uses gentle rolling movements, concentrating on certain areas of the body.

The Bowen Technique, or Bowen Therapy as it is sometimes known, is named after its innovator Tom Bowen. The Technique is very subtle and relaxing and involves no hard or prolonged pressure. It is a holistic therapy and so addresses the ‘whole you’ and not just the bit that hurts!

There is a very wide range of acute and chronic conditions for which Bowen Therapy has provided outcomes ranging from long-term rapid remission to significant improvement in presenting problems, mobility, physiology, pain, stress and general well-being.

Conditions that can respond well include:

  • Acute and chronic pain with Musculoskeletal or Neurological Origins
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Back pain
  • Lumbago
  • Sciatica
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Neck Pain
  • Arm Pain and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • TMJ syndrome
  • Shoulder pain (frozen shoulder)
  • Leg and foot pain (Plantar Fasciitis)
  • Emotional Depression and Stress
  • Asthma
  • Sporting and other trauma injuries

The treatment

Bowen can be performed through light clothing whilst the client lies on a table, although treatment can be carried out just as effectively if the client is in a chair.

Bowen is not like massage, acupressure or chiropractic. It is unique. There is no manipulation or force used in any of the moves. The thumbs or fingers are used to gently press against a muscle, tendon or ligament then, after a second or two the therapist rolls over the area allowing the muscle, tendon or ligament to gently release beneath his/her hands.

There is no pain involved, in fact, if you are in pain your muscles will tense up which is not beneficial. Also, your brain will focus on the pain and this will detract from the treatment.

Ideally, the brain should have nothing else to think about but the Bowen move. The pressure used is firm but gentle, so it is quite light. Even if you are suffering from a painful condition like Fibromyalgia, you can still have Bowen Therapy – your therapist will adjust the pressure to suit you. Even new-born babies benefit from the treatment, especially if they have had a difficult birth.

The benefits

The principal benefit of Bowen Therapy is the often rapid and long term or permanent remission from pain, reduced stress, greater mobility and improved physical and emotional quality and enjoyment of life. Additional benefits can include increased energy, improvement in the immune system, rebalancing of the body, improved circulation, lymphatic drainage and detoxification.

Further and important benefits of Bowen Therapy are that it has few contraindications. It is very gentle, relaxing and non-invasive involving no manipulation, and is therefore ideal for everyone including new borns, young children, and the aged.

Yes. Some babies after birth have had a difficult time being born, reflux, colic, feeding problems, and may be unsettled or distressed. it can be very beneficial for children to receive Bowen. Children are not invincible and encounter the same aches and pains as we grown-ups do. Many children, especially those who are very active can suffer tight muscles from a lack of warming up and cooling down and inadequate stretching. Regular Bowen treatments can help prevent injuries to children and keep them doing what they love.

A typical Bowen Therapy treatment lasts between 40 – 50 minutes depending on the individual client and the condition that is present.  Young children under 5 can take less than 30 mins and babies 20 to 30 mins. In this time frame, we also take a history and do an assessment.

No. You can stay fully clothed, although it would be great if you can avoid wearing jeans or stiff clothing. Contact needs to be made with certain areas of the body which can be hard with all the seams on jeans and some pants.

Ideally, you need to be able to lie face down on the treatment table in order to achieve maximum benefit and relaxation. If you can’t lie face down because it’s uncomfortable on your stomach, a pillow can be used, or the next best thing is on your side. If required, the treatment can be performed seated in a chair.

If you have specialised mobility needs, please call me to discuss so we can work out a plan.

In a session, I use gentle touch/movement over the muscle tendons, and ligaments.

The pressure used is always a “firm but gentle” touch.

How this treatment is experienced by clients does vary.

Some people find that it’s like meditation and go into deep relaxation.  Others find the session to be very peaceful and rejuvenating.

As the technique can display fast results, the majority of clients require only 3 to 4 sessions (sometimes more) to vastly improve or even eliminate most symptoms they presented with. They can then change to a maintenance regime which involves 1 weekly treatment for 3 weeks. After a 2 month period, if one injures or re-injures themselves, it’s best to have a session as quickly as possible to stop the body from going into shock.

Bowen Therapy is suitable for all. From newborn babies to the elderly it is even practised widely on animals, particularly horses, worldwide. There is a wide range of conditions that Bowen Therapy can assist with, regardless of how long or short a time you have been suffering from the ailment.

Your therapist may advise you not to have any other form of physical therapy or other forms of manipulation such as massage, chiropractic, physiotherapy etc. for 5-7 days after your session while your body adjusts to the treatment. After your treatment, you will be given advice on how to get the maximum effect and benefits from your session.

Remedial Massage

Remedial massage involves soft tissue massage which is used to treat various muscular complaints.

Zyacklin Therapies practice remedial massage, specialising in the Lester Cox Technique. Please see below for more specific information.

Lester Cox Technique

The Lester Cox Technique is a soft tissue method of treating conditions involving almost the whole body, including the neck, shoulders, elbows, hands, back, coccyx, hip, hamstrings, knees, calves, ankles toes and more.

The technique mobilises, reduces pain and restores function to affected body parts. There is no bone-crunching involved, and frequent visits are not usually required. The technique involves physically repositioning tendons, ligaments and cartilage into their correct position leading to pain relief and an alleviation of the condition.

Lester Cox developed this unique technique by feeling and intuition, and by comparing the side of the body functioning normally with the side that was not functioning. He then developed various techniques to ensure that the dysfunctional side had the same soft tissue positioning as the healthy functioning side.

The resultant technique of literally moving the tendons, ligaments and cartilage developed and refined over thirty five years has been outstandingly successful with many thousands of patients able to attest its effectiveness.

Yes, you can claim your remedial treatment at Zyacklin Therapies with participating private health insurers.

A typical 1-hour session may last 50 to 55 minutes, allowing for history, disrobing and re-dressing.

Some people find during the massage, that it’s very firm, and others refer to it as an ouch for as long as you can say ouch.

I would recommend when starting, every 10 to 14 days then 3 weekly to once a month to once every 2 months.

Appointment Bookings:

It is preferable that bookings are made directly through our website (by clicking the Book Now button). This prevents delays in clients securing a date and time that suits. Often our therapist is with a client and will need to return calls later in the day.

It would be appreciated if you arrive no more than 5 minutes early to ensure the previous client has time to leave.  If you do arrive earlier, please take a seat without ringing the bell.

We know unexpected things can pop up, so we are happy for you to modify your booking – we just ask that you please give us at least 24 hours notice. You can cancel or reschedule via a phone call or text, website contact form, or email within a minimum of 24 hours.

No-shows and last-minute cancellations are difficult for our business and can mean other clients miss out on that time slot. Cancellations within 24 hours will result in a fee equal to 50% of the booked session cost. If you fail to arrive, 100% of the booked session cost is payable.

Once your booking is confirmed, you have accepted these conditions.
